KASBAH

The kasbahs of the South of Morocco is the most beautiful expression of this architectural amazigh art.Ouarzazate, as well as the valley of Drâa and the valley of Dadès, offer the most beautiful specimens of this remarkable architecture of earth. The kasbah in amazigh is named ighrem.

The construction of kasbahs follows several rules. They are erected on foundations of stone, encircled by thick walls which are flanked by four corner decorated towers.

These beautiful buildings were fortified houses of bullies (representative of the Sultan), or Pasha (governors of an imperial city). The Kasbah controlled the oases and their access roads, served as a refueling point for desert people and defended the caravan against bandits and looters nomads.
