CARPET / TAPESTRY
The region of Souss Massa Draa has enormous potential in the craft sector. Among all the craft activities of Morocco, the weaving is certainly the most ancient tradition. There are two types of carpet: the rural carpet, more commonly known as carpet Amazigh (Azrou, Middle and High Atlas, including the region of Ait Ouaourguite - Ouarzazate) and the modern or city carpet (Rabat). The rural carpet is the most important and the most representative category in the world level. It is a production typically Atlasique with a decoration and exceptional motives, appropriate for a very specific tribe. The carpets of the High Atlas have a very fine texture, a wool of sheep or goat, and are distinguished by their strength. In terms of light, the weavers of the High Atlas are attached to strong colors (yellow, red, golden yellow, orange). The the oldest carpets are the ones of Taznakht and those of Zayane who make the pride of Moroccan crafts. Originally from the High Atlas, the carpet of Taznakht is made by knots on two lines; their bottom is yellow, their drawings are geometric, dense of colors red, dark green and off-white. Carpets have a great value not only aesthetic and functional, but also a value of expression and registration of the tradition and the ancient civilization through the motives and the decorative colors used. The weaving is the main activity of the sector Ouarzazate-Zagora. Besides the craftsmen organized within 4 cooperatives, many craftsmen devote to this activity in their homes. The annual average production of carpets is estimated at 113 000 m ². The Regional Council Souss Massa launches the project of museum of the carpet of Taznakht which the operators of Ouarzazate lead currently. This museum is under construction and will serve as shop window for all the sector. |
