
Construction works of Tifnit equipped fish unloading site
To contribute to developing and restructuring small-scale fishing sector in the region, HM King Mohammed VI launched, on January 15th Saturday in the village of Tifnit, the rural commune of Sidi Bibi (province of Chtouka Ait Baha), the construction works of an equipped fish unloading site, worth 42.5 million dirhams
The project, to benefit 500 small-scale fishermen operating on 169 small boats, is intended to improve the living and working conditions of this social segment.
It also aims at developing and restructuring the sector by setting up an area of activity that is integrated into its economic and social environment, and to create an environment conducive to better marketing of sea products.
The project is part of an approach aimed at improving the product quality, increasing the beneficiaries' income by 36%, reducing costs by 19%, and achieving a 42% rise in yields.
The site, which spans on 14,900 square metres, includes an activity area for fishermen comprising mainly 170 premises, a mechanics workshop, a workshop to repair boats, a fuel store and premises for fishing material sale.
The construction of this site falls within the scope of the “Small-Scale Fishing” project which provides for building 11 equipped fish unloading sites and six wholesale markets and developing infrastructure for small-scale fishing at 10 ports.
This project also provides for equipping 2,000 fish hawkers, integrating women into the fishing sector, training the beneficiaries and ensuring sustainable development of halieutic resources.
The site, will be operational in December 2011
